It is eleven at night on Al Reem Island, day nine of a twenty-eight-day swing, and the flat has gone quiet in the way it does when one of you is away. You open the laptop to book his flight home. The shared calendar shows a hotel in Muscat on dates he said he was on site. By midnight you have read enough messages to know. He lands in nineteen days.
For couples who live by a roster, betrayal arrives with a timetable. The discovery, the questions, the return and the next departure all sit on a schedule someone else wrote. You are alone in a city far from family, keeping the children’s routine going, and the person who owes you answers is offshore, on a site with patchy signal, or asleep in a camp three hours away.
- Rotation work does not cause affairs. It shapes how betrayal is found, talked about and repaired, because time together comes in blocks.
- Plan by phase: the days before departure, the weeks apart, the first days home. Each phase needs its own small agreement.
- If you are frightened of your partner, or your phone or money is being watched, go to the safety section below first.
Why the rotation keeps reopening the wound
Rotation life already trains the body in a cycle. A tightening before the flight out. A long stretch of coping alone. A jolt on the day of return, when two routines collide in one kitchen.
After betrayal the cycle carries new weight. Departure day feels like the affair starting again. A missed call from site turns into evidence. The first evening home brings an urge to ask everything at once, alongside the fear of spoiling the few weeks you have.
Broken sleep, a racing chest when the phone buzzes, checking his location at three in the morning. These are signs of a body under threat, far from proof of an unreasonable mind. Your nervous system is scanning for danger with nobody beside you.
Shame tends to follow. Shame for missing it, for the months you held everything together while he was away, for staying in a city you chose for his work. Set it down where it belongs. The affair was your partner’s choice and your partner’s to account for. Distance explains some of the opportunity. It explains none of the decision.

Three phases, three agreements
Nobody thinks well at the departure gate. Give each part of the cycle its own small agreement instead. Choose the phase you are in right now.
Where are you in the rotation right now?
Hold the hardest conversation at least three days before departure, never on the final night. Agree what contact looks like while you are apart: how often, at what hour, on which app. Write it down. Agree too on what happens if signal drops for a day, so silence does not turn into a story at 2am.
Keep the big questions for the agreed calls. Between calls, write each question in one note on your phone instead of sending it. Guard your own days: sleep, food, daylight, and one adult conversation in person. If you want therapy, book it for your evenings, built around your week rather than his roster.
Agree one protected hour for the betrayal conversation on day two or three. Keep the rest of the time for sleep, children and ordinary life. Facts first, feelings next, decisions later. Bring the note from your phone and work through it, rather than asking everything in the first evening.
If your questions feel impossible to order, how to ask for the truth after betrayal sets out which ones to ask first and which to park.
A script for the night before departure
When the leaving day comes and you feel the pull to settle everything, say this once, before dinner, in a level voice:
I am not deciding about us before you fly. While you are away I want a video call every second evening at eight, ten minutes. If you miss one, message me first. When you are home we will give this one protected hour, on the Thursday.
The script names a pause, sets a rhythm you both test in real conditions, and moves the big conversation into one room.
The Trust chapter of Stay, Pause or Leave: The Practical Workbook After Betrayal suits rotation couples well. Take the contact agreement to it, and use each swing as a review period: what was agreed, what happened, what you felt in your body when it did. For readers across the Emirates, the workbook page for expats in the UAE covers the same ground with Gulf life in mind.
A fictional example
Sana is a composite, not a real person. Her husband works twenty-eight days on and twenty-eight off at a site in Al Dhafra. She found out on day eleven and spent the next week writing messages at 2am and deleting them. Then she made three changes: one note on her phone for questions, one friend in Khalifa City who knew, and a call every second evening. When he came home they had one hour on the third day, with the list on the table. It hurt. It was also the first conversation in months where neither of them was racing for a flight.
Practical checks while you are on your own
If separation is on your mind, slow the decision and speed up the advice. Abu Dhabi has a Civil Family Court for non-Muslim foreigners under Abu Dhabi Law No. 14 of 2021, and residence, children’s travel and money each follow their own rules. Which rules apply to you depends on your religion, nationality, where you married and whose visa you hold. Speak to a family lawyer licensed in Abu Dhabi before you sign anything, move money or travel with the children. This page is education, not legal advice.
When education is not enough
If you are afraid of your partner, if your phone, passport or money is being watched or controlled, if there has been violence or a threat of it, or if you are thinking of harming yourself, stop reading and reach for help now.
In Abu Dhabi, call 999 for the police or 998 for an ambulance in an emergency. Abu Dhabi Police’s Aman service takes confidential reports on 800 2626. Ewaa, the shelter service for women and children run by the Abu Dhabi Centre for Shelter and Humanitarian Care, answers on 800 7283. If your phone is monitored, call from a friend’s phone or a work line, and clear this page from your browsing history.

Questions people ask
Do work rotations cause affairs?
Long stretches apart, fatigue and loneliness are part of rotation life for many couples. They shape opportunity and distance. They do not make the choice. Responsibility for an affair sits with the person who had it, wherever they were working.
Should we talk about the affair by phone while my partner is on rotation?
Keep calls short and agreed in advance. Use them for check-ins and practical facts. Save the long conversation for a protected hour in the same room, and keep a note of your questions for it.
Is online couples therapy workable when one partner works rotations?
Yes, for many couples. Sessions are planned around the roster, and some partners begin with individual sessions during the weeks apart. Kita Tabachka works online with individuals, couples and expats.
